Now in its twelfth leaf, the quality of the Chateau Margene Estate Vineyard fruit is proving to be truly exceptional.

The vineyard’s soils vary from fine sandy loam to clay loam. The hot summer days are offset by the cooling effects of the Templeton Gap winds each afternoon. Of the 6 acres planted, 5 1/2 are devoted to Cabernet Sauvignon leaving the remaining 1/2 acre to a mix of the other primary Bordeaux varieties: Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petite Verdot and Malbec.

President/Winemaker Michael Mooney, is a strong proponent of lower yield vineyards.  A detailed practice of vine balance includes deficit irrigation, shoot/cluster thinning and leaf removal (to increase sunlight to the fruit). Sustainable farming practices are incorporated for the long term benefit of the vines.  The grapes are hand picked at peak physiological ripeness to achieve maximum varietal and site expression (terrior).

In addition to their own vineyard, Chateau Margene contracts with select growers to purchase high-quality, low-yield fruit. Those vineyards are in varying microclimates and districts within the Paso Robles and Monterey County AVA's, lending diversity of flavors. Most are under acreage contracts, which offers Michael a great deal of control over their vineyard practices.  The Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir is sourced from two uniquely expressive vineyards.

The wine artisty and blending begins with the assimilation of various varietals and select vineyards.  Michael blends fruit the from the 9 differnet vineyards to create the Chateau Margene Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Sauvignon wines.  Always leaning towards fruit forward wines, the use of oak is limited to allow the full expression of the grapes and their sense of place.  Wines can be in the barrel from 6 to 32 months, depending on the varietal and the winemakeing style desired.
